A Flashlight On Lalettan’s 35 Songs

Yes, the complete actor Mohanlal or otherwise our own Lalettan has recorded his voice in 35 songs in different movies. Of that 6 songs are superhit – kaithapoovin , annaara kanna vaa, aatumanal paayayil, ithaloorrnnu vannu, karukaru karuthoru pennaanu and A. E. I. O. U cholli padichum.

In 1985, for the movie- Onnanam Kunnil Oradi Kunnil directed by Priyadarshan, he sang his first ever film song. The music was composed by Raghu Kumar and lyrics was written by Chunakkara Ramankutty. He sang the song- “Sindooramegham Shringaarakaavyam” along with MG Sreekumar.

“Neeyarinjo Mele Manathu” song from the movie ‘Kandu Kandarinju’ hit the screen in the same year and there was no one who couldn’t identify Mohanlal’s voice in this song. Mala and Mohanlal performed this song sequence giving their own voice. Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Rahman starred in this movie.

In the coming year, he sang the song “hridayam oru vallaki unarum oru pallavi” in his movie ‘Padayani’, directed by TS Mohan and produced by Sukumaran. The film stars Mohanlal, Mammootty, Shobhana and Adoor Bhasi in lead roles. The film had musical score by A. T. Ummer.

In his movie ‘Pada mudra’, he sang 2 songs and played a dual role too. The film won him the 1988 Filmfare Award for Best Actor. “Arumilla” and “Ombathu maasam” both were almost 2 minutes songs.

On 23 December 1988, Chithram was released and it broke all existing records in Malayalam cinema until then, written and directed by Priyadarshan. It is one of the highest-grossing films in Malayalam film history which collected more than ₹3 crore from theatres. The songs were composed by Kannur Rajan, lyrics penned by Shibu Chakravarthy and film score by Johnson. M. G. Sreekumar sang most of the songs in the film. The film has 8 beautiful songs of which 2 folk songs were sung by Mohanlal- “Kaadumi naadumellaam” and “aey moonnu”.

The vowel song -“A. E. I. O. U” in the movie ‘Aye Auto’ directed by Venu Nagavalli and starring Mohanlal and Rekha in the lead roles, was sung by him. Aye Auto was the second highest-grossing Malayalam film of 1990 at the box office, behind His Highness Abdullah. The songs were composed by Raveendran and lyrics by Bichu Thirumala.

Mohanlal came up with his first hindi song “Awaaraa hoon” in his movie ‘Vishnulokam’ a 1991 film, directed by Kamal. The music was composed by Raveendran and Shankar Jaikishan and lyrics was written by Kaithapram and Hasrat Jaipuri.

In his movie ‘Butterflies’, a 1993 comedy film directed by Rajiv Anchal he sang a song “Pon Thidambu” along with Raveendran and Pradeep. The film has six songs composed by Raveendran and written by K. Jayakumar.

Mohanlal sang a funny song in his 1993 romantic thriller, Gandharvam directed by Sangeeth Sivan. The film has 6 songs composed by S. P. Venkatesh and lyrics by Kaithapram. He sang the song “abalathvamalla”.

He came up with an interesting song full of jumbled words in his movie Kalippattam, written and directed by Venu Nagavalli. He sang the song “vazhiyoram veyil kaayum” along with K. S. Chitra where she sang like a naughty girl. A naughty cute song from Mohanlal and K S Chitra.

“Ezhimala Poonchola” is yet another mesmerizing song sung by K S Chitra and Mohanlal in his movie film ‘Spadikam’, written and directed by Bhadran, starring Mohanlal in the lead role of a village rowdy Thomas Chacko aka Aadu Thoma. This film was the highest-grossing film of the year 1995 in Kerala and was the longest running movie of the year. It was later remade in all major south Indian languages. Mohanlal won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor and Filmfare Award for Best Actor for this role. The songs were written by renowned lyricist P. Bhaskaran and composed by S. P. Venkatesh.

In his movie ‘Ustaad’ he sang a song “Theerchayilla” which was composed by Thej Mervin and lyrics by Kannan Pareekutty. It is a 1999 film written by Ranjith and directed by Sibi Malayil.

Mohanlal along with some kids sang the song “Peppera pera pera perakka” in his movie ‘Olympian Antony Adam’.It’s a comedy thriller written and directed by Bhadran, starring Mohanlal, Meena, and Nassar. Music is done by Ouseppachan and lyrics by Gireesh Puthenchery.

For the movie ‘Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu’ he sang a song “Kaithappoovin” along with Chitra. This is the first song that he sang apart from his own movie. Music was by MG Radhakrishnan and lyrics by Kavalam Narayana Panicker.

In his superhit movie ‘Raavanaprabhu’ he gave his voice in the song “Thakilu Pukilu”. The song was sung by MG Sreekumar, Sujatha Mohan, Mohanlal, Prabhakaran and Radhika Thilak. Songs were written by lyricist Gireesh Puthenchery and composed by the composer and playback singer Suresh Peters. The film went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of the year 2001. It won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Popular Film.

Mohanlal sang along with Vasundhara Das in his own movie ‘Praja’. The song “Aaja” was composed by MG Radhakrishnan and lyrics by MP Muraleedharan.

The song “valuthayoru marathinte mukalil” from the movie ‘Chathurangam’ starts with his own voice. MG Sreekumar composed and sang the song and lyrics by S Ramesan Nair.

“Karukaru karuthoru” is a super hit song from ‘Balettan’, directed by V. M. Vinu. The movie was the biggest hit of 2003. It won the Kaveri Film Critics’ Award for the most popular Malayalam film of 2003. The hit songs of this movie were composed by M. Jayachandran and lyrics by Gireesh Puthenchery.

The most melodious and heart touching song in his list is “Ithaloornnu veena” song from ‘Thanmathra’, written and directed by Blessy, based on Padmarajan’s short story “Orma”. Thanmathra won five Kerala State Film Awards, which includes the Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and a Special Mention Award for the debutant actor Arjun Lal. It also won the Best Feature Film in Malayalam Award at the 53rd National Film Awards. Music is composed by Mohan Sithara and lyrics by Kaithapram.

In his movie ‘Udayon’ he has sung a song “Puthumannu” along with Ouseppachan. Lyrics by Arumughan Vengidangu and music by Ouseppachan. He has given his voice in the song “Angethala” too.

“Jeevithamoru” is his song from the movie ‘Maadambi’, lyrics by Anil Panachooran and music by M Jayachandran.

“Annarakanna vaa” is a hit song in his list. This song is from the movie ‘Bhramaram’, written and directed by Blessy. It was composed by Mohan Sithara and lyrics by Anil Panachooran.

“Naathoone Naathoone” is a comedy song from the movie ‘Oru Naal Varum’. Mohanlal and Rimi Tomy sang the song whereas lyrics by Murukan Kattakkada and music by MG Sreekumar.

Mohanlal sang the song “If You Want A Lover” in his movie ‘Pranayam’ directed by Blessy. Lyrics by Leonard Cohen and music by M Jayachandran.

“Aattumanal Paayayil” is one of his hit songs from the 2012 movie ‘Run Baby Run’. The song was definitely a sensational one and he bagged an award- New Sensation in Singing in 2012 Asiavision awards.

“Malayaattoor Malayum Keri” is a small song bit from the movie ‘Pulimurugan’ sang by Mohanlal. It became the first film to cross ₹100 crore and ₹150 crore in the Malayalam film industry and is currently the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever.

In his latest yet to be released movie ‘Villain’ his voice is recorded in the song “Kandittum Kandittum”, a melodious song sung by K.J. Yesudas.

Apart from these songs he has recorded his voice for movies like Sooryagayathri, Manichitrathazhu, Iruvar, and Casanova.
